Age and inflammation after cardiac surgery

The cardiac surgical population is aging and these patients have increased expectations with respect to quantity and quality of postoperative survival. Some of the physiological changes related to aging that impact surgical outcomes are better understood than others, and recently we are also beginning to gain a better understanding of the impact of aging on immunity and the immune response to surgery.¹²
