Modern plastic surgery was born out of trauma during World War I and trauma is an essential part of the specialty. United Kingdom (U.K.) military and single-centre civilian data report plastic surgical operative involvement in 29 to 40% of major trauma patients requiring surgery,1,2 with a particularly high workload in lower limb trauma. The substantial role of plastic surgery in trauma has been reported in other settings, including a United States civilian Level I trauma centre3.
