The sentinel node biopsy has come of age

Abstract

In 2015, Peter Sasieini and I wrote an editorial on the sentinel node biopsy, calling for consensus on its use in clinical practice. At that time, despite controversial claims of a survival advantage, it was broadly considered a staging procedure. It provided prognostic information, reduced the trauma of nodal relapse in node positive patients and provided some reassurance for those with a negative node who were able to avoid elective completion lymphadenectomy.1 The pros and cons of the procedure were in equipoise.
