Influence of foreign direct investment on indicators of environmental degradation

Abstract

This study aims to contribute to the existing literature by looking at the influence of foreign direct investment on carbon dioxide emissions, carbon footprint, and ecological footprint. In order to realize the aim of this study, we have utilized the augmented mean group estimator, which is supported by common correlated effect mean group estimator in the analysis for 20 countries. The panel results reveal that foreign direct investment has no effect on environmental degradation indicators. The panel results further reveal that gross domestic product, energy consumption, and urbanization are the main contributors to environmental degradation. The results at country level show that foreign direct investment and urbanization increase pollution in the developing countries while they mitigate pollution in the developed countries. Moreover, gross domestic product and energy consumption increase pollution for both developed and developing countries, which includes China and the USA. The negative impact of foreign direct investment on environmental degradation in the developed countries can be explained on the basis that these countries have strong environmental regulations, which makes it almost impossible for dirty foreign industries to invest therein. From the output of this research, several policy recommendations are enumerated for the investigated countries.

Brain inflammation is associated with cognitive dysfunction, especially in elderly. Trigonelline is a plant alkaloid and a major component of coffee and fenugreek with anti-diabetic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. In this study, the beneficial effect of trigonelline against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cognitive decline was assessed in the rat. LPS was injected i.p. at a dose of 500 μg/kg to induce neuroinflammation and trigonelline was administered p.o. at doses of 20, 40, or 80 mg/kg/day 1 h after LPS that continued for one week. Trigonelline-treated LPS-challenged rats showed improved spatial recognition memory in Y maze, discrimination ratio in novel object discrimination test, and retention and recall in passive avoidance paradigm. Additionally, trigonelline lowered hippocampal malondialdehyde (MDA) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and improved superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione (GSH). Furthermore, trigonelline depressed hippocampal nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB), toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF α) in LPS-challenged rats. All of the effects of trigonelline followed a dose-dependent pattern and in some aspects, it acted even better than the routinely-used anti-inflammatory drug dexamethasone. Collectively, trigonelline is capable to diminish LPS-induced cognitive decline via suppression of hippocampal oxidative stress and inflammation and appropriate modulation of NF-κB/TLR4 and AChE activity.

Predictive factors of long-term rectal toxicity following permanent iodine-125 prostate brachytherapy with or without supplemental external beam radiation therapy in 2216 patients

PurposeWe analyzed factors associated with rectal toxicity after iodine-125 prostate brachytherapy (BT) with or without external beam radiation therapy (EBRT).Methods and MaterialsIn total, 2216 prostate cancer patients underwent iodine-125 BT with or without EBRT between 2003 and 2013. The median followup was 6.9 years. Cox proportional hazards modeling was used for univariate and multivariate analyses to assess clinical and dosimetric factors associated with rectal toxicity. Dosimetric parameters from 1 day after implantation (Day 1) and 1 month after implantation (Day 30) were included in the analyses.ResultsThe 7-year cumulative incidence of Grade 2 or higher rectal toxicity was 5.7% in all patients. The multivariate analysis revealed that antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy, neoadjuvant androgen deprivation therapy, treatment modality, Day 1 rectal volume receiving 100% of the prescribed dose (RV100), and the Day 30 minimal percent of the prescribed dose delivered to 30% of the rectum (RD30) were associated with rectal toxicity. Day 1 RV100 was a common predictor in both BT-alone and the BT + EBRT groups. The 5-year cumulative incidence of Grade 2 or higher rectal toxicity was 12.6%, 5.9%, and 1.7% for BT + 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, BT + intensity-modulated radiation therapy, and the BT-alone groups, respectively (p < 0.001).ConclusionsRectal dosimetric parameters in BT were associated with late rectal toxicity. Although the risk of rectal toxicity was higher when EBRT was combined with BT, with proper and achievable rectal dose constraints intensity-modulated radiation therapy yielded less toxicity than 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy.

Five fraction accelerated partial breast irradiation using noninvasive image-guided breast brachytherapy: Feasibility and acute toxicity

PurposeTo improve efficiency, convenience, and cost, a prospective phase II trial was initiated to evaluate accelerated partial breast irradiation delivered with noninvasive image-guided breast brachytherapy (NIBB) via five once-daily fractions.Methods and MaterialsWomen ≥50 years old with early-stage breast cancer undergoing breast conserving surgery were enrolled. Eligibility criteria included invasive carcinoma ≤2.0 cm or ductal carcinoma in situ ≤3.0 cm, ER positive (if invasive), lymph node negative, LVI absent, and margins negative by 2 mm. Patients received a total dose of 28.5 Gy in five daily fractions. NIBB was delivered using two orthogonal axes for each fraction. Applicators were selected to encompass the lumpectomy cavity with a 1.0 cm clinical target volume margin and 0 to 0.5 cm planning target volume margin. Acute and late toxicity was assessed based on CTCAE v3.0.ResultsForty patients with a mean age of 67 years underwent protocol treatment. Mean tumor size was 1.0 cm (0.3–2.0 cm). Eighty percent had invasive carcinoma and the remainder had ductal carcinoma in situ. Mean tumor bed volume was 21 cc (5–79 cc) and mean breast volume was 1319 cc (499–3044 cc). Mean breast separation with compression was 6.7 cm (3.5–8.9 cm). All patients tolerated well. Median discomfort with compression was 1 (range: 0–7) on a 10-point pain scale. Acute skin reaction was Grade 0–1 in 70%, Grade 2 in 28%, and Grade 3 in 3%. Acute skin toxicity was not associated with breast size but was associated with larger breast separation with compression (p < 0.01) and larger applicator size (p < 0.01). No Grade 3+ late toxicity or local recurrences have been observed at a median followup of 14 months.ConclusionsAccelerated partial breast irradiation delivered using NIBB over five daily fractions is a convenient treatment option that is feasible and well tolerated.

Mechanisms of therapeutic CDK4/6 inhibition in breast cancer

Cyclin dependent kinase (CDK) 4/6 inhibitors have advanced the treatment of metastatic breast cancer by targeting the cell cycle machinery, interrupting intracellular and mitogenic hormone signals that stimulate proliferation of malignant cells. Preclinical evidence demonstrated that derangements of cyclin D1, CDK4/6, and retinoblastoma expression are common in breast cancer, and suggested a therapeutic benefit from interrupting this axis required for cell cycle progression. Studies of cell lines and animal models of breast cancer have demonstrated the complex interplay between the cell cycle and estrogen receptor and human epidermal growth receptor 2 signaling, which informs our understanding of synergistic use of CDK4/6 inhibitors with endocrine therapy, as well as mechanisms of resistance to endocrine therapy. Interestingly, estrogen receptor activity leads to upregulation of cyclin D1 expression, but the estrogen receptor is also in turn activated by cyclin D1, independent of estrogen binding. Early CDK inhibitors were nonspecific and limited by systemic toxicities, while the current generation of CDK4/6 inhibitors have shown promise in the treatment of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. Preclinical investigations of the three CDK4/6 inhibitors approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (palbociclib, ribociclib, and abemaciclib) lend further insight into their mechanism of action, which will hopefully inform the future use and refinement of these therapies. Finally, we summarize evidence for additional novel CDK4/6 inhibitors currently in development.

How much of the predisposition to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis can be explained based on previously reported associations?

Abstract

Purpose

Our insight in the genetics of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) has become clearer through information provided by genome-wide association studies and candidate gene studies, but remains still not fully understood. Our aim was to assess how many different genetic risk variants contribute to the development of HT.

Methods

147 HT cases (10.2% men) and 147 controls (13.6% men) were qualified for the analysis. Intrinsic and environmental factors were controlled for. Polymorphisms (SNP) were chosen based on the literature and included markers of the genes PTPN22, CTLA4, TG, TPO among others, and of genomic regions pointed by GWAS studies. SNP were typed on a microarray. Variants in the HLA-DRB1 gene were identified by Sanger sequencing.

Results

Multivariate predisposition to HT was modeled. Based on the investigated group, a model of seven variables was obtained. The variability explained by this model was assessed at only 5.4821% (p = 2 × 10−6), which indicates that many dozens of factors are required simultaneously to explain HT predisposition.

Conclusions

We analyzed genetic regions commonly and most significantly associated with autoimmune thyroid disorders in the literature, on a carefully selected cohort. Our results indicated a lack of possibility to predict the risk of HT development, even with a multivariate model. We therefore conclude that strong associations of single genetic regions with HT should be interpreted with great caution. We believe that a change in the attitude towards genetic association analyses of HT predisposition is necessary. Studies including multiple factors simultaneously are needed to unravel the intricacies of genetic associations with HT.

Rapidity and high sensitivity are the critical factors for the diagnoses of heart attacks and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is used as a gold standard marker for its diagnosis. To realize the accurate detection of cTnI, a novel ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor for cTnI determination was developed upon dual inhibition effect of Ag@Cu2O core-shell submicron-particles(SPs) toward CdS sensitized the (001) facets of anatase titanium dioxide nanosheets (TiO2/CdS). In this study, the TiO2/CdS composite not only indicated stable and excellent photoelectric signal but also provided abundant functional group to immobilized cTnI antibodies (Ab1). To obtain the high sensitivity, Ag@Cu2O core-shell SPs were used as labels of the secondary antibodies (Ab2), owning to competitive absorption of light and consumption of electron donor, less light energy and electron donors arrived at the TiO2/CdS sensitization structure. Besides, the remarkable steric hindrance effect of Ag@Cu2O core-shell SPs labeled secondary antibodies (Ab2) conjugates obstructed the transfer of electrons and diffusion of the electron donors to the photoelectrode surface, leading to further decrease of photocurrent. Therefore, the constructed immunosensor has an ultrasensitive response to cTnI in a liner range of 0.02 pg/mL to 50 ng/mL with a low detection limit of 6.7 fg/mL, and exhibits good sensitivity and admirable stability. Moreover, the strategy provided an efficient and novel approach for dual inhibition effect in PEC immunoassay development.

Fiber optic surface plasmon resonance sensor for detection of E. coli O157:H7 based on antimicrobial peptides and AgNPs-rGO

A fiber optic surface plasmon resonance (FOSPR) sensor was developed for detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7) in water and juice, based on antimicrobial peptides (AMP), Magainin I, as recognition elements and silver nanoparticles-reduced graphene oxide (AgNPs-rGO) nanocomposites assisted signal amplification. The uniform AgNPs-rGO was fixed on the surface of optical fiber and covered with gold film. Not only was the SPR response greatly enhanced, but also the AgNPs was prevented from being oxidized. The FOSPR showed a sensitivity of about 1.5 times higher than that fabricated only with gold film. In the assay, Magainin I, immobilized on the surface of gold film, could specifically capture E. coli O157:H7, resulting in the wavelength shift of the SPR absorption peak. Under the optimized conditions, the SPR resonance wavelength exhibited a good linear relationship with natural logarithm of the target bacteria concentration in the range of 1.0 × 103 to 5.0 × 107 cfu/mL with the detection limit of 5.0 × 102 cfu/mL (S/N = 3). The FOSPR sensor showed good specificity for E. coli O157:H7 detection compared to other bacteria similar to the target bacterial species. Furthermore, the FOSPR sensor was successfully applied to the detection of E. coli O157:H7 in water, fruit and vegetable juice with the satisfactory recoveries of 88–110%. This assay for E. coli O157:H7 detection possesses high sensitivity, good selectivity, reproducibility and stability. In addition, the AMP based SPR biosensing methodology could be extended to detect a wide variety of foodborne pathogens. Therefore, the versatile method might become a potential alternative tool in food analysis and early clinical diagnosis.

Prediction and optimization of CI engine performance fuelled with Calophyllum inophyllum diesel blend using response surface methodology (RSM)

Abstract

The transportation demand in India is increasing tremendously, which arouses the energy consumption by 4.1 to 6.1% increases each year from 2010 to 2050. In addition, the private vehicle ownership keeps on increasing almost 10% per year during the last decade and reaches 213 million tons of oil consumption in 2016. Thus, this makes India the third largest importer of crude oil in the world. Because of this problem, there is a need of promoting the alternative fuels (biodiesel) which are from different feedstocks for the transportation. This alternative fuel has better emission characteristics compared to neat diesel, hence the biodiesel can be used as direct alternative for diesel and it can also be blended with diesel to get better performance. However, the effect of compression ratio, injection timing, injection pressure, composition-blend ratio and air-fuel ratio, and the shape of the cylinder may affect the performance and emission characteristics of the diesel engine. This article deals with the effect of compression ratio in the performance of the engine while using Honne oil diesel blend and also to find out the optimum compression ratio. So the experimentations are conducted using Honne oil diesel blend-fueled CI engine at variable load conditions and at constant speed operations. In order to find out the optimum compression ratio, experiments are carried out on a single-cylinder, four-stroke variable compression ratio diesel engine, and it is found that 18:1 compression ratio gives better performance than the lower compression ratios. Engine performance tests were carried out at different compression ratio values. Using experimental data, regression model was developed and the values were predicted using response surface methodology. Then the predicted values were validated with the experimental results and a maximum error percentage of 6.057 with an average percentage of error as 3.57 were obtained. The optimum numeric factors for different responses were also selected using RSM.

Toward Task Connectomics: Examining Whole-Brain Task Modulated Connectivity in Different Task Domains

Abstract
Human brain anatomical and resting-state functional connectivity have been comprehensively portrayed using MRI, which are termed anatomical and functional connectomes. A systematic examination of tasks modulated whole brain functional connectivity, which we term as task connectome, is still lacking. We analyzed 6 block-designed and 1 event-related designed functional MRI data, and examined whole-brain task modulated connectivity in various task domains, including emotion, reward, language, relation, social cognition, working memory, and inhibition. By using psychophysiological interaction between pairs of regions from the whole brain, we identified statistically significant task modulated connectivity in 4 tasks between their experimental and respective control conditions. Task modulated connectivity was found not only between regions that were activated during the task but also regions that were not activated or deactivated, suggesting a broader involvement of brain regions in a task than indicated by simple regional activations. Decreased functional connectivity was observed in all the 4 tasks and sometimes reduced connectivity was even between regions that were both activated during the task. This suggests that brain regions that are activated together do not necessarily work together. The current study demonstrates the comprehensive task connectomes of 4 tasks, and suggested complex relationships between regional activations and connectivity changes.

Quantitative Three-Dimensional Reconstructions of Excitatory Synaptic Boutons in Layer 5 of the Adult Human Temporal Lobe Neocortex: A Fine-Scale Electron Microscopic Analysis

Abstract
Studies of synapses are available for different brain regions of several animal species including non-human primates, but comparatively little is known about their quantitative morphology in humans. Here, synaptic boutons in Layer 5 (L5) of the human temporal lobe (TL) neocortex were investigated in biopsy tissue, using fine-scale electron microscopy, and quantitative three-dimensional reconstructions. The size and organization of the presynaptic active zones (PreAZs), postsynaptic densities (PSDs), and that of the 3 distinct pools of synaptic vesicles (SVs) were particularly analyzed. L5 synaptic boutons were medium-sized (~6 μm2) with a single but relatively large PreAZ (~0.3 μm2). They contained a total of ~1500 SVs/bouton, ~20 constituting the putative readily releasable pool (RRP), ~180 the recycling pool (RP), and the remainder, the resting pool. The PreAZs, PSDs, and vesicle pools are ~3-fold larger than those of CNS synapses in other species. Astrocytic processes reached the synaptic cleft and may regulate the glutamate concentration. Profound differences exist between synapses in human TL neocortex and those described in various species, particularly in the size and geometry of PreAZs and PSDs, the large RRP/RP, and the astrocytic ensheathment suggesting high synaptic efficacy, strength, and modulation of synaptic transmission at human synapses.

Theta Oscillations Index Frontal Decision-Making and Mediate Reciprocal Frontal–Parietal Interactions in Willed Attention

Abstract
Attention can be attracted reflexively by sensory signals, biased by learning or reward, or focused voluntarily based on momentary goals. When voluntary attention is focused by purely internal decision processes (will), rather than instructions via external cues, we call this "willed attention." In prior work, we reported ERP and fMRI correlates of willed spatial attention in trial-by-trial cuing tasks. Here we further investigated the oscillatory mechanisms of willed attention by contrasting the event-related EEG spectrogram between instructional and choice cues. Two experiments were conducted at 2 different sites using the same visuospatial attention paradigm. Consistent between the 2 experiments, we found increases in frontal theta power (starting at ~500 ms post cue) for willed attention relative to instructed attention. This frontal theta increase was accompanied by increased frontal–parietal theta-band coherence and bidirectional Granger causality. Additionally, the onset of attention-related posterior alpha power lateralization was delayed in willed attention relative to instructed attention, and the amount of delay was related to the timing of frontal theta increase. These results, replicated across 2 experiments, suggest that theta oscillations are the neuronal signals indexing decision-making in the frontal cortex, and mediating reciprocal communications between the frontal executive and parietal attentional control regions during willed attention.

Spatial and temporal distribution of NO2 and SO2 in Inner Mongolia urban agglomeration obtained from satellite remote sensing and ground observations

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) are important pollution gases which can affect air quality, human health and even climate change. Based on the combination of tropospheric NO2 and SO2 column density products derived from OMI satellite with the ground station observations, this study analyzed the spatial-temporal distribution of NO2 and SO2 amount in Inner Mongolia urban agglomerations. It shows that NO2 increased continually from 2005 to 2011 at a rate of 14.3% per year and then decreased from 2011 to 2016 at a rate of −8.1% per year. SO2 increased from 2005 to 2007 with a rate 9.7% per year. While with a peak value in 2011, SO2 generally showed a decreasing trend of −1.6% per year from 2007 to 2016. With regard to the spatial pattern, the highest levels of NO2 occur in Hohhot and Baotou, followed by Wuhai and Ordos, the least in Bayannur. Compared with NO2, the spatial distribution of SO2 is slightly different. The pollution of SO2 is the most serious in Wuhai, followed by Hohhot and Baotou, and the lightest in Ordos and Bayannur. The diurnal variations of NO2 and SO2 are basically the same, which decrease from 0:00 to 6:00, then increase to a peak value at 8:00, and decrease from 8:00 to 15:00. The diurnal variation of NO2 and SO2 is highly related to the diurnal variation of both anthropogenic emission and boundary layer height. Differently, the long-term spatial-temporal distribution of NO2 and SO2 are more closely related to human activities.

Controllable synthesis of NiCo2O4/Al core-shell nanowires thermite film with excellent heat release and short ignition time

NiCo2O4 has been selected as an oxidizer to realize the nanothermite film for the first time in this study. The NiCo2O4/Al core-shell nanowires (NWs) thermite film has been fabricated using a facile hydrothermal-annealing synthesis method and a controllable magnetron sputtering process. The as-obtained NiCo2O4/Al NWs thermite film shows a uniform structure and distribution on the substrate, with a favorable interfacial contact between the bimetallic oxide and the fuel at the nanoscale. It is found that the quantity of Al plays a key role in the total heat release magnitude. The maximal heat release of the NiCo2O4/Al nanothermite film has reached 2076.0 J/g at the optimal Al deposited thickness of 450 nm with the obtained optimum Al/NiCo2O4 molar ratio of 4.9. Moreover, this design strategy is highly compatible with microelectromechanical systems (MEMs) and it can be applied to realize other nanothermites composed by bimetallic oxide and fuel.

Liquid metal embrittlement in laser beam welding of Zn-coated 22MnB5 steel

Despite frequent reports of liquid metal embrittlement (LME) during resistance spot welding, no work has been done to investigate the LME sensitivity in laser beam welding (LBW) of advanced high strength steels. The present study was therefore undertaken to reflect the LME sensitivity of Zn-coated 22MnB5 press-hardening steel as a function of stress intensity and heat input during LBW. The results proved a direct relation between the external load and LME susceptibility, where the threshold tensile stress of about 80%YS is necessary to trigger the embrittlement. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) in conjunction with electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) results confirmed the intergranular penetration of Zn along the prior austenite high-angle grain boundaries in upper-critical heat affected zone (UCHAZ). The presence of Zn over the maximum Zn-solubility of austenite promotes α-Fe(Zn) transformation along the LME-crack which assists the loss of ductility. The present findings provide an understanding of the mechanism of embrittlement in UCHAZ and suggest solutions to mitigate the LME in LBW of boron steels.

Deposition behavior, microstructure and mechanical properties of an in-situ micro-forging assisted cold spray enabled additively manufactured Inconel 718 alloy

Cold spray is capable to additively manufacture oxide-free metallic parts in open air due to its low processing temperature. However, for metals with relatively high hardness such as Inconel 718 superalloy (IN718), it is still a big challenge to get dense deposits by using low-priced nitrogen gas. In this work, In-situ micro-forging (MF) was introduced to cold spray by mechanically mixing big-sized 410 stainless steel (410SS) particles into the IN718 powder so that the deposited IN718 layer can be hammered and plastically deformed by the MF particles during spraying and results in fully dense deposits. As 50 vol% MF particles were mixed into the IN718 powder, the porosity was decreased from 5.6% to 0.26%. Due to the low impact velocity, 410SS particles were not embedded into the IN718 deposits and the possible contamination was avoided. An oxide scale removal induced increment in deposition efficiency was detected for the first time. Due to the lower porosity and enhanced inter-particle bonding, a great improvement in ultimate strength from 96 to 464 MPa was achieved by the in-situ MF effect. After heat treated at 1200 °C for 6 h, the sample fractured at a high strength of 1089 MPa and revealed a ductile fracture manner.

Flexural fatigue properties of polycarbonate fused-deposition modelling specimens

This report presents an experimental investigation on the influence of part build orientation on the flexural fatigue behaviours of fused-deposition modelling (FDM) processed polycarbonate (PC) parts. Quantification of fatigue behaviour is required to show the feasibility of manufacturing industrial parts with the FDM technique. Therefore, stress-cyclic strain (S-N) curves were experimentally obtained for alternating stress (R − 1) and mean stress (R − 0.5). Test performances show that the part build orientation significantly affects the dynamic behaviour of FDM parts because of the inner anisotropy. Furthermore, to prove the validity of simulation methods such as finite element analysis (FEA), a case study was conducted. A designed part was simulated with FEA and the obtained von Mises stresses were corrected using the Goodman correction and the S-N curve for R − 1. This part was also manufactured and tested to compare the simulated and experimental results. The results show good accuracy between the virtual and physical models.
