Enhanced biocompatibility and long-term durability in vivo of Mg-Nd-Zn-Zr alloy for vascular stent application

Publication date: 5 October 2017
Source:Journal of Alloys and Compounds, Volume 720
Author(s): Lin Mao, Hao Zhou, Li Chen, Jialin Niu, Lei Zhang, Guangyin Yuan, Chengli Song
Biodegradable magnesium (Mg) alloy emerges as revolutionary biomaterial by meeting both engineering and medical requirements for implants. In this study, we report a Mg alloy Mg-2.5Nd-0.21Zn-0.44Zr (wt. %, denoted as JDBM) potential for vascular stent application due to its outstanding performance in corrosion behaviors and biocompatibility. The investigation of corrosion properties evaluated by immersion test and electrochemical measurement shows less susceptibility to pitting corrosion and lower corrosion rate of JDBM as compared with AZ31 alloy. The corrosion products of JDBM do not cause significant adverse effect on the cell viability and growth during in vitro cytotoxicity test of the Mg extract via human vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs). We also investigated macrophage response to the Mg extract and observed compromised foreign body reaction (FBR) determined by human peripheral blood derived macrophage fusion and inflammatory cytokine and chemokine secretion. At last, we performed in vivo degradation assessment via implantation of JDBM stent in an animal model, and confirmed long-term stability and structural integrity of the stent in blood vessel. Thus, the JDBM alloy with excellent biocompatibility and long-term stability and durability in vivo, represents a significant advance in the development of biodegradable implants.

Experimental study on thermal and chemical stability of pentaerythritol blended with low melting alloy as possible PCM for latent heat storage

Publication date: November 2017
Source:Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science, Volume 88
Author(s): K.P. Venkitaraj, S. Suresh
This paper presents the experimental investigation on the performance of a novel organic Solid-Solid/Low Melting Alloy composite PCM for thermal energy storage applications. Poly alcohols are solid-solid organic PCMs having low heat transfer characteristics due to their poor thermal conductivity. So additives are used to improve the thermal properties of poly alcohols. Metal and its alloys with low melting point exhibit a much stronger heat transfer capacity than that of traditional organic PCMs. Therefore, low melting metals and alloys can be considered as effective additives for improving the thermal performance of organic PCMs. But the presence of additives used for enhancing the heat transfer characteristics may result in thermal and chemical degradation of the material. In this experimental work, the effect of adding the low melting alloy (LMA) of Bi, Sn, Zn and In on the thermal and chemical stability of Pentaerythritol (PE) was investigated using the characterisation methods such as TGA-DTA, DSC and FTIR. For this, thermal cycling of pure PE, and PE mixed with 0.1% & 0.5% of LMA were performed. The characterisation results of PE mixed with LMA after 100 thermal cycles were compared with pure PE samples. The thermal conductivity of the PCM samples was studied using laser flash method. It was found that thermal conductivity of PE, PE+0.1%LMA, and PE+0.5%LMA after 100 thermal cycles decreased by 3.21%, 4.55% and 10.08%. Thermogravimetric analysis of pentaerythritol added with LMA showed a noticeable change in material thermal behavior due to thermal cycling. The test results revealed that the weight loss in the pure PE was lower than the weight loss for PE samples mixed with LMA subjected to 100 thermal cycles. The FTIR results did not show the formation of any new chemical bonds in pentaerythritol and therefore PE samples with LMA additives can be considered as chemically stable during thermal cycling. DSC and DTA results showed about 6%, 8% and 15% of the decrease in enthalpy value after 100 thermal cycles for pure PE, PE+0.1%LMA and PE+0.5%LMA respectively. Thermal storage/release test conducted showed a decrease of 14.64% and 30.22% in the time taken for total energy storage and release for PE+0.1%LMA and PE+0.5%LMA compared to pure PE.

Micro-electrolysis/retinervus luffae-based simultaneous autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification for low C/N wastewater treatment

Abstract

Nitrogen bioremediation in organic insufficient wastewater generally requires an extra carbon source. In this study, nitrate-contaminated wastewater was treated effectively through simultaneous autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification based on micro-electrolysis carriers (MECs) and retinervus luffae fructus (RLF), respectively. The average nitrate and total nitrogen removal rates reached 96.3 and 94.0% in the MECs/RLF-based autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification (MRAHD) system without ammonia and nitrite accumulation. The performance of MRAHD was better than that of MEC-based autotrophic denitrification for the wastewater treatment with low carbon nitrogen (COD/N) ratio. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) revealed that the relative abundance of nirS-type denitrifiers attached to MECs (4.9%) and RLF (5.0%) was similar. Illumina sequencing suggested that the dominant genera were Thiobacillus (7.0%) and Denitratisoma (5.7%), which attached to MECs and RLF, respectively. Sulfuritalea was discovered as the dominant genus in the middle of the reactor. The synergistic interaction between autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrifiers played a vital role in the mixotrophic substrate environment.

Ethnopharmacological relevanceThe flower of Abelmoschus manihot (Linn.) Medicus (A. manihot), as a traditional Chinese Herbal medicine, was used widely in China with efficacy of inducing diuresis for treating strangurtia, and subdhing swelling and detoxicating. It has been reported that Huangkui capsule, prepared by the extract of the flower of A. manihot, can reduce the content of urinary protein, serum creatinine and serum urea nitrogen in nephropathy rats and processes renoprotective activity, while the action mechanism need to illuminate deeply.Aims of the studyIn this study, we investigated the protection effect of Huangkui capsule on tubulointerstitial fibrosis in chronic renal failure (CRF) rats and its mechanism against high glucose-induced epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) in renal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2) of its bioactive components.Materials and methodsThe animals were divided into normal group, CRF model group and Huangkui capsule-treated group. Hematoxylin eosin (HE) staining and Masson staining were applied to observe pathological changes in renal tissue of different groups. Biochemical indicators including serum urea nitrogen (BUN), urine protein (UP) and serum creatinine (Scr) were measured according to the manufacturer's instructions of kits. HK-2 cell damaged model was established to access the protection effect and action mechanism of five main flavonoids from Huangkui capsule. The experimental cells were divided into eight groups: control group, model group, positive drug group and five main flavonoids treated groups. The dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (DCFH-DA) assay was used to determine the reactive oxygen species (ROS) in different groups. Western blot was applied to analyze the expression of pathogenesis-related proteins in different groups.ResultsThe results stated that Huangkui capsule significantly inhibited the elevation of Scr, BUN, UP, the expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), phosphorylation-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (p-ERK1/2), NADPH Oxidase 1, NADPH Oxidase 2 and NADPH Oxidase 4 in adenine-induced CRF rats. The main bioactive components of quercetin (QT), hyperoside (HY), isoquercitrin (IQT), gossypetin-8-O-β-D-glucuronide (GG) and quercetin-3′-O-glucoside (QG) at the dosage of 100µM, like NADPH oxidase inhibitor diphenyleneiodonium, exhibited a significant effect on inhibiting the expression of α-SMA, p-ERK1/2, NADPH Oxidase 1, NADPH Oxidase 2 and NADPH Oxidase 4 in high glucose-induced HK-2 cells, especially GG.ConclusionsThese results demonstrated that Huangkui capsule and the flavonoids components prevent tubulointerstitial fibrosis in CRF rat involvement in the action mechanism of inhibiting NADPH oxidase/ROS/ERK pathway.

The properties of transparent TiO2 films for Schottky photodetector

Publication date: August 2017
Source:Data in Brief, Volume 13
Author(s): Sung-Ho Park, Joondong Kim
In this data, the properties of transparent TiO2 film for Schottky photodetector are presented for the research article, entitled as "High-performing transparent photodetectors based on Schottky contacts" (Patel et al., 2017) [1]. The transparent photoelectric device was demonstrated by using various Schottky metals, such as Cu, Mo and Ni. This article mainly shows the optical transmittance of the Ni-transparent Schottky photodetector, analyzed by the energy dispersive spectroscopy and interfacial TEM images for transparency to observe the interface between NiO and TiO2 film. The observation and analyses clearly show that no pinhole formation in the TiO2 film by Ni diffusion. The rapid thermal process is an effective way to form the quality TiO2 film formation without degradation, such as pinholes (Qiu et al., 2015) [2]. This thermal process may apply to form functional metal oxide layers for solar cells and photodetectors.
