Localised inflammatory reactions at sites of subcutaneous methotrexate injections during treatment with ultraviolet B

Abstract

Ultraviolet B (UVB) phototherapy may be used in combination with methotrexate to treat psoriasis. When given in high doses as chemotherapy, methotrexate can induce a "radiation recall" reaction where a rash develops at sites of previous exposure to sunlight or radiotherapy, and where keratinocyte necrosis is a prominent histopathological finding¹. However, this reaction does not seem to occur when methotrexate, given orally in conventional dermatological doses, is combined with UVB^{2, 3}.
