Biologics, or biological medications, are used to prevent, treat, and cure disease. These drugs are developed from blood, proteins, viruses, and living organisms and from a variety of living sources, including mammals, birds, insects, plants, and bacteria. They can be made of tiny components like sugars, proteins, or DNA, or can be from whole cells or tissues. They have been used commonly in Medicine. We are all familiar with the biological medications such as Botox (botulinum toxin or onabotulinumtoxina) used for muscle tension, migraines, and wrinkles, and Lantus (long-acting insulin or insulin glargine) used for diabetes mellitus.
