Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is characterized by unexplained usually asymmetrical cardiac hypertrophy with variable degrees of myocardial fiber disarray and fibrosis. Although there was initial controversy about whether true obstruction to the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) existed, it is now accepted as an important hallmark of the condition.
