Application of photonic crystals and photonic crystal fibers (PCF) for chemical analysis is a new, rapidly growing field of analytical chemistry. The aim of this review is to summarize pros and cons of PCF combination with normal Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) regarding to chemical analysis. The main attention is focused on discussing of analytical potential, restrictions, critical points and analytical characteristics (limit of detection, selectivity, etc.) of these PCF-Raman devices in order to estimate its future applicability. While fabrication and structures of these devices discussed briefly, the main rules which enable to get higher Raman intensity inside PCF and an influence of SERS substrate (plasmonic nanoparticles and nanostructured coatings) on PCF optical properties and signal attenuation are analyzed thoroughly.
