Can predicting transfusion in cardiac surgery help patients?

In this issue of the British Journal of Anaesthesia, Klein and colleagues¹ describe the ACTA-PORT, a new score for predicting the risk of one or more red blood cell transfusions in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The authors' desire to provide a simple, accurate tool to help predict the risk of transfusion in patients undergoing cardiac surgery is commendable, but does it help our patients?
