Bariatric Surgery Restores Gut-Brain Signaling to Reduce Fat Intake

Publication date: 7 February 2017

Author(s): Stephanie Caligiuri, Paul J. Kenny
Hankir and colleagues (2017) show that gastric bypass surgery in rats enhances the sensitivity of cells in the gut to dietary lipids. In turn, these cells signal to stimulate dopamine neurotransmission in the striatum to inhibit fat consumption. The findings have important implications for the development of non-invasive therapeutics for obesity.
