Author(s): Johannes Karl Fink
This chapter discusses reactive extrusion, which is an attractive route for polymer processing like polymerization, branching, etc. The chapter mainly deals with the formulation of polymers by reactive extrusion polymerization. Extruders are used for bulk polymerization of monomers. The techniques of characterization and experimental setup for reactive extrusion are described in the literature. Analysis for reactive extrusion and devolatilization in a modular co-rotating twin-screw extruder and the appropriate software is presented. Strategies are devised in reactive extrusion to reduce the amount of heat. The polymers that have been obtained by reactive extrusion according to the mechanism of reaction are summarized. Many biodegradable compositions have been synthesized and investigated and these compositions are then reviewed and summarized. Chain extenders are used to increase the molecular weight of polymers. Various applications are then described in the chapter.
