The fundamentals and applications of poly(urethane)s are discussed in this chapter. A brief description of the discovery of polyurea is given. The monomers for the synthesis of poly(urethane)s consist of diisocyanates and polyols. The other monomers discussed here include polyamines, chain extenders, catalysts, and blowing. Special additives are the special monomers added for the enhancement including reinforcing materials and flame retardants. The curing technique has been studied using isothermal Fourier infrared spectroscopy, DSC, and adiabatic exothermic experiments. Various mechanical and thermal properties are described. The applications and uses, such as removal of surfactant, phosphorus, and microbial indicators, are discussed extensively. Several types of interpenetrating networks with poly(urethane)s have been prepared and characterized. Thus the chapter concludes that poly(urethane)s are used in our day-to-day life.
