Abstract
In this issue of Clinical Endocrinology, Elder et al demonstrate the profile of salivary cortisol and cortisone following synacthen administration. Using a dexamethasone-induced model of adrenocortical insufficiency in healthy males, their data demonstrate the kinetics of serum cortisol paired with salivary cortisol and cortisone following both low (1mcg) and conventional dose (250mcg) synacthen. Peak serum cortisol occurred at 30 minutes following 1mcg synacthen, and serum cortisol continued to rise at 120 minutes following the 250mcg dose.
