A discussion on the potential impact of residential radon exposure on the quality of exposure and risk assessment for former uranium miners
Abstract Epidemiological evidence of lung cancer risk from radon is based mainly on studies of underground miners where occupational exposures were, historically, relatively high in comparison to residential indoor exposure. However, radiation protection measures have caused radon levels in uranium mines to decrease significantly in more recent periods. Miners’ occupational exposure is limited to their working years while they are exposed to environmental radon at home over their...

A Novel Laryngoscope-assisted Method for Sealing Pharyngocutaneous Fistula
Pharyngocutaneous fistula (PCF) is one of the most common but stranded complications for salvage laryngectomy. As for localized fistula, there is no convincing standard and method to cure. This paper described a patient who was submitted to extensive resection of mass in right lingual root, total laryngectomy, and pharyngoesophageal reconstruction with an anterolateral thigh flap (ALTF), because of recurred carcinoma of right lingual root which invaded bilateral epiglottis. 2 weeks after surgery,...

Virtual Planning for Exchange Cranioplasty in Cranial Vault Remodeling
The use of virtual surgical planning and computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing has gained popularity in the surgical correction of craniosynostosis. This study expands the use of virtual surgical planning and computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing in cranial vault reconstruction by using these methods to reconstruct the anterior vault using a single endocortically-plated unit constructed from the posterior calvarium. This technique was designed to reduce the risk of undesirable...

Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak After Septoplasty in Crouzon Syndrome
Crouzon syndrome presents with craniofacial deformities due to early fusion of cranial sutures. Deviation of the nasal septum could be seen clinically in Crouzon syndrome. Cerebrospinal fluid leaks (CSF) after septoplasty are extremely rare and typically present with simple rhinorrhea, meningitis, and pneumocephalus. Herein, we report an adult patient with Crouzon syndrome who experienced CSF complication after septoplasty surgery. Supplemental Video: CSF leak repair operation, http://links.lww.com/SCS/B930...

Orthognathic Surgery in Craniosynostosis: A Retrospective Study
Introduction: Craniosynostosis is characterized by the fusion of 1 or more sutures of the skull leading to craniofacial deformations. Our aim is to describe the dental malocclusion associated with craniosynostosis, syndromic, or nonsyndromic, and also the treatment used and its stability. Material and Methods: This retrospective study included all patients who presented at our Department for facial growth monitoring and occlusal management following syndromic and nonsyndromic craniosynostosis....

Morbidity Associated with Structural Graft Use in Paramedian Forehead Flap: A Propensity-Matched Study
Introduction: Paramedian forehead flap for nasal reconstruction may involve the use of a structural graft. The authors hypothesized that the use of structural grafts with paramedian forehead flap is associated with an increased risk of 30-day complications. Methods: This is a retrospective study of the American College of Surgeon (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP). We identified all patients undergoing paramedian forehead flap reconstruction from 2007 through...

Amyloidosis in the Bulbar Conjunctiva Following Transconjunctival Ptosis Surgery
A 52-year-old woman presented with persistent eye irritation following her third transconjunctival ptosis surgery. Examination revealed a yellow-pink nodular lesion in the bulbar conjunctiva. Excision biopsy and histopathology showed granulation tissue. However, the tumor recurred 1 month postoperatively. Repeat biopsy and histopathology revealed amyloid deposits. Systemic work-up showed no other lesion. A retained suture found in the upper fornix was also removed. No tumor recurrence has since been...

Multiple Structural Microform Defects Suggest Role of Modifier Genes
One of the biggest challenges in clinical genetics is establishing associations between specific germline mutations and the resulting spectrum of phenotypes. The careful characterization of clinical presentations continues to be a tool for establishing these genotype phenotype correlations. The authors intend, by presenting a case study, proposing that the concomitant occurrence of a combinations of mild structural anomalies in the same individual may be due to changes in genes that can be linked...

Radiological Findings of Nontraumatic Thrombosed Temporal Artery Aneurysm Mimicking Parotid Gland Mass
A 54-year-old male patient had preauricular swelling mimicking parotid gland mass. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings were showed a connection with the temporal artery. There wasn’t a trauma history. The aneurysm wall showed contrast enhancement. The patient was diagnosed with true temporal artery aneurysm. The aneurysm was excised. Epicanthoplasty With Rotated-advanced-back Cut Flap
Background: Epicanthoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in Asia. The aim of this study was to present a rotated, advanced, back cut flap (R-A-B flap) that leads to correct the congenital epicanthus effectively with satisfactory results. Methods: From January of 2017 to December of 2018, we performed the modified cut back flap epicanthoplasty to correct epicanthus. The esthetic results were evaluated with patients’ feedback: perfect, good, dissatisfied, or failed. ...

Protection of Medical Staff during Tracheotomy: Lessons Learned from the COVID-19 Pandemic
Background: During the ongoing pandemic of COVID-19, tracheotomy under emergency situation is considered a high-risk procedure that causes probable expose to aerosolized secretion. Summary: We reviewed our case and previous reports, and summarized a detailed protocol that is needed to protect medical staffs who perform tracheotomy under the COVID-19 pandemic, considering the patient’s condition, experience of medical staff members, and available facilities and equipment. Key Messages: For efficient...
