Olfactory Detection Thresholds for Primary Aliphatic Alcohols in Mice
AbstractProbing the neural mechanisms that underlie each sensory system requires the presentation of perceptually appropriate stimulus concentrations. This is particularly relevant in the olfactory system as additional odorant receptors typically respond with increasing stimulus concentrations. Thus, perceptual measures of olfactory sensitivity provide an important guide for functional experiments. This study focuses on aliphatic alcohols because they are commonly used to survey neural activity in...

Hemifacial hyperplasia: a case series and review of the literature
Condylar hyperplasia is known to result in facial asymmetries and constitutes a well-recognized group of unilateral mandibular enlargements. Condylar hyperplasia has been sub-classified into hemimandibular hyperplasia and hemimandibular elongation. A much rarer disorder, hemifacial hyperplasia (or hemifacial hypertrophy) is a congenital malformation characterized by prominent unilateral overdevelopment of the hard and soft tissues of the face. The affected side grows at a faster rate than the non-affected...

Re: Use of an endotracheal tube in the biphasic fixation of a mandibular fracture
We read with pleasure the article written by Mohamed et al1 about biphasic external fixation of mandibular fractures. This article described how to technically perform an external fixation device using a biphasic system inspired after the one created by Morris.2 We agree with the authors that external fixation now has limited indications, but is still a very interesting option in selected cases, such as pathological fractures due to osteoradionecrosis or infection.3

Free flap donor site during early review consultations: is it really an issue?
Donor site complications, following microvascular free tissue transfer, can limit recovery in patients treated for head and neck cancer, with a curative intent. The Patient Concerns Inventory (PCI-HN) is a prompt list that provides patients with repeated opportunities to raise issues they feel are important and want to discuss. Here, we look at baseline results from a cluster preference randomised control trial with consultants either “using” or “not using” the PCI package in clinic to identify patient...

Can we justify the continued use of botulinum toxin A in the management of myofascial pain?
We initially conducted a pilot study to evaluate the impact of botulinum toxin A (BtA) on increased masseteric mass associated with pain. After injection we assessed its impact on the muscle mass and the impact, if any, on reported pain, in a group of 10 patients who were refractory to conservative management. Results of this pilot study indicated that clenched and unclenched muscle dimensions showed no significant reduction (-0.82 clenched and −1mm unclenched). However, what did prove to be significant...

Review and update on the use of the microanastomotic coupler device for arterial anastomosis in free tissue transfer
While a simple interrupted sutured anastomosis remains the gold standard in microsurgery, the introduction of the microanastomotic coupler device (MACD) has decreased procedure time and thrombosis risk, and improved the patency of venous anastomoses. The aim of this review is to update the evidence-based advantages of the MACD on arteries, based on clinical and experimental data, and to compare them to the hand-sewn approach in free flap transfer. All relevant articles that appeared in the PubMed...

Systematic review of lingual nerve retraction during surgical mandibular third molar extractions
The lingual nerve is at risk of damage during mandibular third molar (M3M) surgery. Current trends to avoid lingual retraction and prevent injury to the nerve run counter to the surgical principles of locating and protecting important structures. To our knowledge, the last review of this subject only considered repurposed lingual retractors such as the Howarth. Other studies have reported the use of purpose-built retractors with improved outcomes for lingual nerve injuries. This systematic review...
